When the fiber laser cutting machine cuts mirror stainless steel, there is usually a protective film, and some special industries also need to ensure that the surface of the stainless steel is free of scratches, so the film is very necessary. For the cutting of the coated metal, the coating is removed first, and then the coating is coated again after the cutting is completed. This process is very cumbersome. However, cutting with a fiber laser cutting machine can be cut with a film, but sometimes the film peels off during the cutting process.

It is common for laminated stainless steel to have both sides coated, and if it is cut directly, it is easy to have burrs on the back of the cut.

If the film peels off, it is related to the cutting gas. During the cutting process, we need to turn on the gas. The gas diffuses on the cutting surface and easily penetrates between the protective film and the material, and the film peels off. The peeling of the film can take into account the laser processing conditions and the reasons of the protective film itself. Let’s take a look at it in detail below.

(1) Reasons for processing conditions

When the protective film is affected by the heat of the laser, there will be signs of melting at the edge of the film cutting. When the melting range is large, the adhesive strength of the protective film will decrease, thereby leaving hidden dangers for the peeling of the film.

When cutting the protective film, make the intensity of the laser beam pattern at the cutting edge a sharp distribution, and be careful not to disturb the laser. The speed condition should be set to a high-speed condition to reduce the thermal effect of the laser on the protective film. In addition, sharp corners or small diameter round cavities in the processed shape are also prone to peeling, and the shape needs to be modified by setting R and so on.

(2) Reasons for protective film materials

If the adhesion of the film itself is low or the quality is poor, the thermal effect during the processing will cause the film to shrink by heat, resulting in gaps. At this time, the cutting assist gas may use this as a breakthrough to instantly invade the surface of the material and the film. During this period, a large area of the coating is peeled off.

It is recommended to make improvements from the root cause for the problem of lamination, and select good materials and manufacturers.
